The WebMD Insight EngineSM is the proprietary technology that sits behind the WebMD Health & Benefits ManagerSM. It intelligently gathers, aggregates, and shares information, which helps guide consumers toward more informed healthcare decisions and better health outcomes.
One of the most powerful aspects of the Insight Engine is its ability to integrate data from multiple sources.
A richer, more comprehensive foundation
The value of a personal health record depends on the information entered into it. To supplement self-reported health information, the Insight Engine manages the secure, consumer-approved import of professionally sourced data directly into consumers' personal health records. This imported data may include eligibility files, clinical lab results, warehoused health data, and medical and pharmacy claims. The result is a more complete — and more accurate — record so individuals can make better-informed health decisions.
With imported, professionally sourced data, sponsoring organizations receive more complete aggregated data on population health than if they depended on self-reported health information alone.
The Insight Engine also manages approved, secure exports to data warehouses, incentive fulfillment vendors, disease management vendors, and health coaches. These batch or real-time exports can drive increased interaction with sponsored health programs. For instance, an individual who approves the export of their health data can receive disease management support as soon a health risk is identified.

Much more than a claims viewer
Through a sophisticated internal rule set, the Insight Engine determines how data is stored, evaluated, and presented to each individual as actionable health information. Rather than simply listing every imported procedure — which requires familiarity with medical claims and clinical protocol to make sense of them — the Insight Engine weights data based on its procedure or diagnostic code, source, and relevance to surrounding data. The results are then interpreted and presented to consumers in the form of highly personalized, intuitive, and actionable health information.
Unlike claims viewers, the Insight Engine applies intelligent algorithms to make sense of the data for the healthcare consumer.
