Lifestyle Improvement Programs

Modifiable risk factors can have a big impact on your population's ongoing health and healthcare expenses — as much as 88% of avoidable healthcare costs are due to an individual's lifestyle choices1. While these risks can be mitigated, most people need help to change long-established unhealthy behaviors. WebMD Lifestyle Improvement ProgramsSM address both the educational and practical aspects of behavior change, and can be seamlessly integrated into your WebMD Health & Benefits Manager system. Lifestyle Improvement Programs are especially effective when implemented with the WebMD Health CoachSM telephonic coaching service.

People who monitor their behavior are more likely to stay motivated

Helping people monitor their health behavior is one of the best ways to promote sustained change. The Lifestyle Improvement Program home page gives individuals access to all of the programs' easy-to-use components:

  1. Guided readings build an understanding of the underlying behavioral and health science for the risk factor.
  2. A journaling function provides motivational writing prompts to keep people engaged.
  3. One or more planners let people track their progress over time and modify planned activities toward improving a specific risk factor.

Some programs also automatically provide personalized recommendations and re-evaluate suggested goals based on the individual's progress to-date. For example, the Weight Management program recommends a meal plan based on the individual's initial set-up, and then changes the recommendation based on changes in his or her reported weight. In the Smoking Planner, individuals can report the number of cigarettes smoked each day as well as the techniques used to stop smoking. By correlating the two, they understand which techniques are most effective in helping them quit.

Individuals are guided to the appropriate Lifestyle Improvement Programs based on their health risks as determined by the WebMD HealthQuotient™ health risk assessment. The Lifestyle Improvement Program home page then gives them a central location with convenient links to all their planners, readings, and journals. From here, they can graphically track their progress and follow convenient links to next steps that encourage progress.

Integration with the WebMD Rewards module lets sponsoring organizations establish rewards for progress through each program, such as an incentive for starting the readings, a different incentive for completing phase 5, and yet another incentive for entering data in a planner.

And Lifestyle Improvement Programs are designed to seamlessly integrate with WebMD Health CoachSM. A coach can monitor progress through any program, providing personalized assessment, feedback, and suggestions to help individuals succeed in their long-term health goals.
