Personal Health Monitoring
The personal health record (PHR) is taking center stage as a way for employers and health plans to help consumers become more active participants in their health and healthcare choices. Now, WebMD offers Personal Health Monitoring: a new service that makes it easy for consumers and their authorized care providers to track biometric information from home medical devices using their WebMD Health RecordSM.
Personal Health Monitoring supports consistent tracking of key information such as blood pressure or blood sugar levels, and improved compliance with protocols to manage chronic conditions. Monitoring can also help control healthcare costs: accurate data supports more efficient care, and accessible, up-to-date information can reduce test duplication and unnecessary office visits.
In a recent study, 68% of consumers were interested in home monitoring devices that enable them to check their condition and send the results to their doctor. In addition, 64% were interested in remote devices that include prompts and reminders to improve their adherence to a health improvement or treatment plan.1
Timely, accurate biometric data enhances personal health record
With Personal Health Monitoring, individuals can upload data from devices such as blood glucose meters, blood pressure cuffs, peak flow meters, and pedometers directly into their WebMD PHR. Built-in Health Trackers present the data in an easy-to-read, graphical format that clearly shows trends and identifies values that are out of their expected range. Consumers can share access to their information with care providers electronically via the WebMD Provider Access service, or by printing summary reports and Health Tracker graphs.

In 2005, 133 million people, almost half of all Americans, lived with at least one chronic condition, and the medical costs of people with chronic diseases account for more than 75% of the nation’s $2 trillion healthcare costs2. Obesity, diabetes, asthma, and cardiovascular disease are common (and costly) conditions that can benefit from consistent, accurate biometric data. Home monitoring supports better collaboration with care providers and more efficient condition management with data that is timely and accurate.
Over 100 million people in the U.S. are affected by chronic disease, and account for over 70% of healthcare costs
Biometric data adds an accurate, real-time element to the personal health record. Consumers can’t skew the data, as they might with self-reported entries, and it is more timely than other professionally sourced data such as claims or lab results.
Flexible service can be tailored to sponsor needs
Employers and health plans have complete control over how the Personal Health Monitoring service is deployed and which segment(s) of their population are offered access:
- Only specific segments, such as those identified with certain chronic conditions and/or behaviors that are identified as targets
- Based on risk as determined by health risk assessment (HRA) completion and the sponsoring organization’s health management objectives
- Entire population, allowing individuals to self-select based on their own desires to better manage their health conditions
- By invitation at login, based on known conditions that have been identified as population health management targets
Personal Health Monitoring is completely integrated with WebMD Rewards and Messaging modules, so sponsoring organizations can reward individuals for participating and can send targeted messages to help ensure ongoing engagement and success.
