As Senior Manager of User Experience & Design, Brian Votaw has long been passionate about digital user experiences and interface design. Working at WebMD Health Services lets him combine this with his passion for improving well-being. Let’s learn a bit more about Brian…
Besides Portland, OR, where else have you lived?
I was born in Arizona and was raised in Everett, WA, where my dad was a Boeing engineer and my mom was a public librarian. I lived in Seattle while going to the University of Washington and working downtown. After college, interactive design took me to New York City, and it was interactive design that brought me back to the west coast, this time to Portland.
What sort of extracurricular activities did you participate in during your youth?
Starting in fifth grade, my parents let me run my paper route, and by seventh grade, I was primed for cross country in fall and track in spring. For six years straight, I lettered early and was team captain three times.
How are you continuing your pursuit of well-being today?
I run a little bit when kicking a soccer ball, playing tennis, tossing a flying disc and picking up a volleyball game here and there. I’ve been known to use a stepper throughout a feature length movie or two at home with my wife. I also do a set of pushups and sit-ups every day. As a family, we occasionally do planking contests and periodically take walks and bike rides in the neighborhood together.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
As a new homeowner, I’ve turned into quite the DIY’er. It’s great when I get to check projects off my to-do list. Then, of course, there’s the usual beach combing and lake hopping along with building Legos and playing Minecraft.
