October is about more than just falling leaves and football. It’s also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when organizations across the country come together to raise awareness, support those affected by breast cancer and promote early detection. It’s a great opportunity to engage your employees in activities that go beyond simply wearing pink. Here are some breast cancer awareness ideas that get everyone involved.
These statistics paint a sobering picture of breast cancer in the U.S.:
- A woman in the U.S. today has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer over her lifetime1 and a 1 in 43 chance of dying from the disease.2
- There are about 4 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S., which means this issue touches countless families and workplaces.3
I share these statistics with you because breast cancer screening is crucial for early detection, which can significantly improve outcomes and reduce mortality rates.
Breast cancer awareness activities for your employees.
Workplace Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities can help raise awareness about breast cancer, promote early detection through regular mammogram screenings and raise funds for research and support. Here are some suggestions for how your organization can celebrate it.
Educational activities to increase breast cancer awareness.
- Lunch-and-learn sessions: Host presentations featuring oncologists, survivors or health care professionals to discuss prevention, risk factors, early detection and treatment options.
- Daily breast cancer awareness tips: All month long, share facts, survivor stories and prevention tips through internal communication channels, emails and workplace social media posts.
- Screening referral events: Partner with local health care providers or your well-being program provider to share referrals and resources to make it easy for women to get an annual mammogram.
- Guest speaker series: Invite medical professionals to share information about breast health and cancer prevention with your team. It’s likely we know someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. You might have a colleague that is open to sharing their experience to support others on their journey or encourage screenings.
- Promote men’s breast cancer awareness: Although breast cancer primarily affects women, men can develop the disease, too. About 2,800 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2025. Make sure your awareness activities include education for men, too.
Fundraising and support activities to increase breast cancer awareness.
- Pink Out Days: Encourage employees to wear pink on designated days and make donations to breast cancer research organizations like Susan G. Komen or the American Cancer Society.
- Promotional items: Distribute pink ribbons, bracelets or other items to promote awareness.
- Creative fundraising events: Host bake sales, silent auctions or raffles to raise money for a local breast cancer support group.
- Charity events: Enter company teams in local breast cancer walks or runs to show community support and raise money for breast cancer research.
Community engagement activities to increase breast cancer awareness.
- Local partnerships: Collaborate with local cancer centers or breast cancer organizations to amplify their efforts and resources.
- Patient care packages: Sponsor care packages for patients undergoing treatment, including comfort items like blankets, books or gift cards to local take-out restaurants.
- Volunteer opportunities: Organize team volunteer sessions at local cancer support organizations to help with administrative tasks or event preparation.
- Survivor recognition: Create programs to honor employees or community members who have battled breast cancer. Encourage employees to share their personal experiences with breast cancer to foster empathy and understanding.
- Transportation and meal support: Offer practical assistance to employees and their family members who may be undergoing treatment.
Wellness-focused activities.
- Wellness challenges: Organize walks, runs or other workplace wellness challenges to bring awareness to the importance of overall good health in reducing breast cancer risk factors.
- Nutrition and lifestyle seminars: Cover topics like healthy eating, stress management and lifestyle choices that may reduce cancer risk.
- Mindfulness programs: Offer meditation sessions, yoga classes or stress management workshops to reduce chronic stress that can impact immune function or those that are caring for someone with breast cancer.
- Healthy cooking demonstrations: Feature anti-inflammatory foods and cancer-fighting nutrients found in leafy greens, berries and omega-3 rich foods.
- Mental health workshops: Address emotional resilience, anxiety management and healthy coping strategies. Share how employees can take advantage of Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) for support.
- Sleep health education: Offer seminars on the importance of quality sleep for immune function and cancer prevention.
Celebrate breast cancer awareness all year long.
The most effective breast cancer awareness efforts go beyond October. Consider incorporating these elements into your year-round corporate well-being efforts:
- Promote mammogram benefits: Ensure employees know their medical benefits include coverage for an annual mammogram. Segment your employee population and send reminders to women for whom mammograms are recommended.
- Share breast health tips: Include regular breast cancer prevention information in wellness communications.
- Support employees who are experiencing breast cancer: Accommodate employees with flexible work arrangements, including remote work and alternate work hours.
- Make fundraising ongoing: Establish continuous fundraising initiatives rather than limiting efforts to October.
- Reminders: Consider distributing reminder cards so employees can track when they are due for their annual screening. We all need a reminder and this is a great way to ensure we can support accountability for each other.
As you plan your organization’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities, remember that whether you choose one activity or implement a comprehensive program, every effort contributes to an important cause that affects millions of people. Choose activities that align with your company culture and employee interests. By combining education, support, and community engagement, you’ll create an October observance that truly makes a difference while fostering a workplace culture that values health and supports one another year-round.
